A prelude to the Microscopy SOCIETY MALAYSIA (MSM)
This Jabatan Pendaftaran Pertubuhan (ROS) Malaysia registered society is all about sharing of knowledge in areas related to microscopy and microanalysis. It was initially registered and called Electron Microscopy Society Malaysia (EMSM) or PERSATUAN MIKROSKOPI ELEKTRON MALAYSIA (PMEM). Founded in early 1991, the society was then centered at the Electron Microscopy Unit of the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Faculty of the Agriculture University of Malaysia (Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, UPM) now known as the University Putra Malaysia. The first President of the society was Professor Emeritus Dr. Abd. Latiff Ibrahim.
The society has since served as an active organisation in Malaysia focusing on all aspects of imaging and analysis techniques, which also include not only electron microscopy but other imaging devices like atomic force microscopy, secondary ion mass microscopy, CD microscopy, confocal microscopy and various high-resolution imaging techniques.
Seeing that the multi disciplinary field of microscopy and microanalysis have significantly revolved and advanced, in 2008, the then President of the society Prof. Ahmad Fauzi Mohd Noor and his committee, proposed on the change of the name of the society by removing the word ‘electron’. They deliberated on the rationale behind the change of the name and matters related to the constitutions of the society prior to forwarding the proposal of name changes to the members. As the society is registered under ROS Malaysia, all steps taken were strictly abiding by the rules set by ROS Malaysia. As the members agreed on the changes in 2010, the process of name changing was then continued by the current President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farid Che Ghazali and his committee members. The application was approved by ROS Malaysia in early June 2012. The new name of the society is Persatuan Mikroskopi Malaysia or Microscopy Society of Malaysia.Registration number: 4919/91 (SELANGOR).
OBJECTIVES OF THE SOCIETY
• For dissemination and advancement of knowledge and skills in microscopy in various disciplines in Malaysia.
• To provide a forum for discussion in microscopy through seminars, conferences and workshops.
• To update on technical information and instrumentation pertaining to microscopy through publications, newsletter and others.
